How to Get Ready for Stump Grinding Day
Stump grinding goes fastest, with the least hassle for you, when the yard is ready before we arrive. Here's a simple checklist for homeowners in Littleton and the Denver Metro.
Send a good photo for your quote
A clear photo lets us give you an accurate free quote without a site visit. Include:
The whole stump, with a shoe or tape measure for scale
Where it is: front yard, backyard behind a gate, along a fence, next to a driveway
Anything close by, like a fence, house, sidewalk or sprinkler head
Send it through our quote form or text it to 832-771-8320.
Utility locates: we call 811
Before every job we request a utility locate through Colorado 811. Locators come out and mark underground gas, electric, water and communication lines with paint or flags. Please leave those marks in place until the job is done.
Private lines aren't covered by 811. If you have anything buried that you installed yourself, like a line to a shed, landscape lighting or a gas line to a grill, let us know where it runs.
Mark sprinkler heads and lines
Sprinkler systems are the most common thing hiding near a stump. Before we come, find the heads closest to the stump and flag them, or tell us roughly where the lines run. If you're not sure, turn the zone on and watch where the heads pop up.
Clear the way
Unlock the gate. Our equipment fits through standard gates. If yours is unusually narrow or the only way in is up steps or a slope, mention it when you send your photo.
Move what you can: patio furniture, planters, hoses, toys and vehicles near the path or the stump.
Keep pets and kids inside while we work. Grinding throws chips.
Do you need to be home?
No, as long as we can get to the stump and know which ones to grind. We'll confirm the details with you before the job.
Decide what happens to the grindings
Grinding leaves a pile of wood chips mixed with soil. Decide ahead of time whether you want to:
Keep them as mulch for garden beds
Have us rake them up and haul them away (debris removal)
Have the hole filled with topsoil, leveled and seeded (soil and seed)
After the job
If you chose soil and seed, keep the area watered. Grass usually comes back within a few weeks, depending on the season and watering. The soil over an old stump can settle a little as deeper roots break down, so a top-up of soil later is normal.
