Soil & Seed After Stump Grinding in Littleton & Denver Metro

Nothing Left Standing But Your Lawn. We fill the hole with topsoil, level it and seed it so grass grows back where the stump used to be.

Why fill the hole with soil?

After grinding, the hole where the stump used to be is full of wood chips. Wood chips settle as they break down, and they don't hold moisture or nutrients the way soil does, so grass struggles to grow over them. Fresh chips also tie up nitrogen while they decompose, which leaves a yellow or bare patch.

Swapping the grindings for topsoil gives you a level, stable spot that grows grass like the rest of your yard, and keeps the ground from sinking later.

Our soil & seed process

1. Remove the grindings. We clear the wood chips out of the hole.

2. Fill with quality topsoil. We backfill the hole and slightly overfill it to allow for settling.

3. Level it. We grade the soil to match the rest of your lawn so you can mow straight over it.

4. Seed it. We seed the patch so grass grows back where the stump used to be.

Soil & seed can be added to any stump grinding job. Mention it when you send your photo and we'll include it in your free quote.

Aftercare: getting the grass established

Grass usually comes up within 2 to 4 weeks after soil and seed, depending on the season and watering.

Keep the seeded patch consistently moist until the new grass is established. Colorado's dry air and strong sun dry out bare soil fast, so light, frequent watering works better than an occasional soak.

Keep foot traffic, pets and mowers off the patch for the first few weeks.

If the soil settles a little after a few rounds of watering or rain, top it up with a bit more soil.

Soil & seed FAQ

How soon will grass grow back? Usually within 2 to 4 weeks after soil and seed, depending on the season and watering.

Can I lay sod instead of seed? Yes. Ask us to fill and level the spot only, and you can lay sod over it.

What if I want to plant a tree there? Ask for a deeper grind and a soil fill without seed, and plant a few feet off the old stump center if you can.

Will the spot sink later? We slightly overfill to allow for settling. If it settles a little more, top it up with a bit of soil.

Can I add soil & seed to any job? Yes. Mention it when you send your photo for a quote.

Soil & seed for HOA yards

Many neighborhoods in Highlands Ranch, Centennial, Parker and Littleton have HOAs that expect front lawns to look uniform. A bare patch or a pile of wood chips where a tree used to be can draw a notice.

Soil & seed gets the spot back to lawn without you having to haul topsoil yourself. If your HOA requires a replacement tree instead, we can grind deeper and leave the spot filled and ready for planting. Check your covenants before you schedule so we can prepare the spot the right way.
