Stump Grinding in Littleton & the Denver Metro

Nothing Left Standing But Your Lawn. Owner-operated, fully insured stump grinding, 6 to 12 inches below grade.

How our stump grinding works

A stump grinder doesn't pull the stump out of the ground. It chews it into wood chips with a spinning cutter wheel, working back and forth across the stump and down below the soil line until the wood is gone. Here's what a typical job looks like with us:

1. Send a photo. Text or upload a picture of the stump (a shoe or tape measure in the shot helps us judge the size) and we'll reply with a free quote.

2. We call Colorado 811. Before every job we request a utility locate so underground gas, electric, water and communication lines near the stump are marked. Colorado law requires a locate before digging, and it's free.

3. We grind. The owners show up and run the grinder themselves. We grind below grade and chase the major surface roots that would otherwise poke up through your lawn.

4. We clean up the way you want. We can haul the grindings away, leave them as mulch, or fill the hole with topsoil and seed it.

Grind depth and backyard access

We typically grind 6 to 12 inches below grade. Six inches is plenty when you just want to mow over the spot and have grass come back. Going closer to 12 inches makes more sense if you plan to plant a new tree or shrub nearby, lay sod or put in a garden bed. Tell us what you plan to do with the spot and we'll set the depth to match.

Grinding doesn't remove every root in the ground. Deeper roots stay behind and break down slowly over the years. That's normal, and it's why the soil over an old stump can settle a little. Filling the hole with topsoil takes care of most of that.

We fit through standard gates. A lot of stumps in the south metro are in fenced backyards, between houses or along a fence line. Our equipment fits through a standard gate, so we usually don't need to take down a fence panel. If your gate is unusually narrow, or the only way in is up steps or a steep slope, mention it when you send your photo. Access is one of the things that affects the price.

What's left behind

Grinding turns the stump into a pile of wood chips mixed with soil, usually a lot more volume than people expect. You have three options:

Leave the mulch. Free, and useful in garden beds once it has aged a bit.

Debris removal. We rake it up and haul it away so the yard is clean.

Soil & seed. We remove the grindings, fill the hole with topsoil, level it with the lawn and seed it so grass grows back.

Stump grinding FAQ

Do I need to be home? No, as long as we can get to the stump and know which ones to grind. We'll confirm the details before the job.

Can you grind stumps next to a fence, house or driveway? Usually, yes. Send a photo showing what's near the stump so we can check before we quote.

How long does it take? Most single residential stumps don't take long. Bigger stumps, or several stumps, take more time.

What if the tree is still standing? We grind stumps; we don't cut down trees. Have the tree removed first and we'll handle what's left.

Will you hit my sprinkler lines? We call Colorado 811 for utilities, but private sprinkler lines aren't marked by 811. Point out sprinkler heads near the stump and we'll work around them.

How much does it cost? It depends on the diameter, roots, access and how many stumps you have. See our stump grinding cost page, or just send a photo for a free quote.

Safety first: we call Colorado 811

Stump grinding goes below the soil line, and roots often run near buried gas, electric, water and communication lines. That's why we request a Colorado 811 utility locate before every job, so those lines are marked before the grinder touches the ground. Colorado law requires a locate before digging, and the service is free.

811 doesn't mark private lines like sprinkler pipes, low-voltage landscape lighting or a line to a detached garage. Point those out when you send your photo, and we'll work around them.
