What affects the price of stump grinding

Most stump grinding companies price by the stump's diameter, then adjust for the things that make a job faster or slower. Here's what moves the number:

Diameter. The bigger the stump, the more wood there is to grind. Measure across the widest part of the cut surface, close to the ground.

Roots. Some trees, like cottonwoods and silver maples, leave big surface roots that flare out well past the stump. Grinding those out takes extra time.

Wood type. Dense hardwoods take longer to grind than softer wood. A stump that has been rotting for a few years is often quicker than a fresh one.

Access. A front-yard stump next to the driveway is simpler than one behind a narrow gate, up steps or on a slope. Our equipment fits through standard gates, but tight or tricky access still adds time.

Number of stumps. If you have several, it's more efficient to grind them all in one visit. We also offer volume discounts for 5 or more stumps, and a bigger one for 10 or more.

Cleanup. Leaving the mulch costs nothing extra. Hauling the grindings away or filling and seeding the hole are add-ons.

Text a photo for a fast quote

You don't need to wait for an in-person estimate. Send us:

1. A photo of each stump, with a shoe or tape measure next to it for scale.

2. A rough diameter in inches, if you can measure it.

3. Where it is (front yard, backyard behind a gate, along a fence) and your city.

4. Whether you want the grindings hauled away or the hole filled and seeded.

We'll reply with a free quote. Estimates are always free.

Ways to keep the cost down: grind all your stumps in one trip, keep the mulch if you have garden beds that can use it, clear toys and pots away from the stump, unlock the gate, and point out sprinkler heads near the stump.

Cleanup options and what they cost

Grinding turns the stump into a pile of wood chips mixed with soil. How you want that handled affects the total:

Leave the mulch. No extra charge. We leave the pile where you want it.

Debris removal. An add-on. We rake up the grindings and haul them away so the yard is clean.

Soil & seed. An add-on. We remove the grindings, fill the hole with topsoil, level it with the lawn and seed it.

There's no charge for the utility locate. Colorado 811 locates are free, and we request one before every job.

Stump grinding cost FAQ

Is the estimate really free? Yes, always. Send a photo or call and we'll quote it at no charge.

Do you charge to call 811? No. Colorado 811 locates are free, and we request one before every job.

Why don't you list one flat price? Two stumps with the same diameter can be very different jobs because of roots, access and wood type. A photo lets us give you a real number instead of a wide range.

Is it cheaper to do several stumps at once? It's more efficient for us to grind them in one visit, so bundle them when you can. We offer volume discounts when you have 5 or more stumps, and a larger discount at 10 or more.

Do you remove the tree too? We grind stumps. Have the tree cut down first, then send us a photo of what's left.

Is stump grinding worth the cost?

Compared with the other options, grinding is usually the simplest way to get rid of a stump:

Leaving it means the stump can take many years to rot, gets in the way of mowing and can send up sprouts.

Digging it out by hand or pulling it with equipment leaves a much bigger hole and tears up more of your yard.

Grinding takes the stump below grade in one visit, so you can mow, plant or reseed right over the spot.

If you're not sure it's worth it for your stump, send us a photo. The quote is free, and you can decide from there.
